Passenger pigeons once filled the skies of the Midwestern United States, to the point they would block out the sun for several minutes as they flew overhead. This made for easy hunting and folks did just that, pushing the creatures to extinction early in the 20th century. Martha, believed to be the last passenger pigeon passed away on September 1, 1914, at the Cincinnati Zoo.
