Flight Deck opened in 1994 as Top Gun inspired by the action film of the same name, produced by Paramount Pictures who also owned the park at that time. It was part of the second generation of suspended coasters from Arrow Dynamics. The company’s first attempt, The Bat, had operated for only two seasons at Kings Island starting in 1981, before mechanical issues forced its closure. In 2006, Paramount sold the park to Cedar Fair and the ride was renamed Flight Deck for the 2007 season. Today it is known as The Bat, honoring its groundbreaking, but troubled, ancestor.
